Piloting ammonia as fuel in shipping

Daphne is continuing the involvement in consortiums with key maritime industry stakeholders, with a common goal of driving new technological innovation and enabling an economically sustainable energy transition. We believe we can't reach climate goals working in isolation.

As a partner in the Green shipping Programme, we are participating in several pilots with key industry stakeholders to come together, share knowledge and partner for a sustainable future that will benefit all.

Ammonia as fuel

Initiated by the Green Shipping Programme, Daphne is also one of the partners in the “Ammonia as Fuel” pilot, an industry partnership led by Grieg Maritime Group. Ammonia has been highlighted as one of the more promising future fuels to achieve reduced CO2 emissions from shipping.

The industry has extensive experience with the transport of ammonia as cargo. However, there are still several uncertainties about how it will function as a fuel for long distances.

The Objectives of the pilot

The project will investigate whether green ammonia can technically function as fuel at long sea distances and whether it is economically feasible. While most projects on ammonia are looking at newbuilds, this pilot aims to retrofit one of Grieg's 8-year old Open Hatch ships.

The pilot was launched in January 2022, and is planned to run until the end of the year with five different focus areas:

  • availability of green ammonia
  • safety, rules and regulations
  • conversion to ammonia operations
  • ESG
  • finance and operations

As the pilot is a study, no final decision will be made as part of the project. However, the pilot will produce a final report with key findings to be shared with the rest of the industry regardless of the conclusion.

Daphne's delivery in the pilot

Daphne Technology develops and offers a range of innovative solutions to eliminate toxic and GHG emissions for the maritime and hard to decarbonise industries. Daphne's technology can be applied to multiple fuel types, such as ammonia, and will have the potential to make a substantial impact across the energy system. Furthermore, with the Daphne technology, the shipowners will have certainty that vessels will comply with local and global emissions regulations regardless of fuel or engine manufacturer or type.

About the Green Shipping Programme

The program aims to advance the Norwegian government's maritime strategies and plans. The programme's vision is to develop and strengthen Norway's goal to establish the world's most efficient and environmentally friendly shipping. The Green Shipping Programme perform studies, start pilots, and transfer knowledge between theory and practice. In addition, they facilitate dialogue and collaboration between all stakeholders. The Green Shipping Programme is an initiative by DNV to gather the maritime industry to escalate investment in green shipping.
