The Scientist behind the invention; Founder & CEO Dr. Mario Michan, PhD, EMBA

Dr. Michan is a sailor, physicist, and founder of Daphne Technology. He is passionate about using innovation to achieve a positive environmental impact and has combined his two life interests, the ocean, and science, to fight climate change.

Mario started his career serving in the Colombian Navy. After receiving an honourable discharge with the Sub-Lieutenant (TK) rank, he worked as a Merchant Ship Deck and Engineer Officer onboard various commercial ships. He has sailed along the entire Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North and South America and has crossed the Atlantic ocean and the Mediterranean sea. He later completed a PhD in Physics and a Global Executive MBA at INSEAD.

As a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the CERN Antimatter Factory, where he contributed to several Nature Publications, Mario had an idea that eventually grew to become the core technology behind Daphne. He saw an opportunity to use aspects of his research to help solve the global maritime emissions problem.

Subsequently, Mario brought his idea to life with the help of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne. In 2017, Daphne Technology spun off from the EPFL and attracted venture capitalists and private investors.

In 2019, Daphne Technology was awarded a €2.5 million grant from the European Union through the highly selective Horizon 2020 EIC Accelerator program. The funding helped develop the most advanced exhaust gas purification system in the market, the ECOnverter.
