Future-proofing gas engines with SlipPure™ technology

SlipPure™ is an innovative exhaust gas cleaning system that removes methane from the exhaust gas. It is a solution for natural gas-fired internal combustion engines in maritime, oil & gas and land-based industries.

SlipPure™ utilises electric power to convert methane to carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). The system consists of a housing, a cartridge and a power supply. The cartridge is fully removable to facilitate periodic maintenance. The exhaust gas passes through several tubes in the cartridge, and the power supply triggers non-thermal plasma generation within the tubes. The non-thermal plasma reaction creates reactive species that react with the methane molecules in the gas and convert them to water and carbon dioxide (in a harmless concentration). 

SlipPure™ only uses electricity during the process, and an intelligent automation system adjusts the cleaning efficiency to ensure the system runs at an ideal load. 

Why is post-combustion methane slip (CH4) reduction necessary?

In the past two years, GHG emissions, especially methane emissions, have been subjected to increased scrutiny due to their high global warming potential (GWP) and fast-increasing levels. 

The increased reliance on natural gas as a fuel for internal combustion engines makes the problem particularly acute. The problem is related to methane slip, unburned fuel not fully combusted in engines, with a global warming potential (GWP100) 28 times that of CO2. Hence, measuring and reducing methane slip is a climate priority in many industries today.

SlipPure™ - how it works:

The plasma generated in the cartridge as a result of the WPP Power Supply produces energetic electrons in the exhaust gas. These electrons interact with the exhaust gas to produce highly reactive species, including hydroxyl radicals. These hydroxyl radicals react with methane, reducing the overall content of methane in the exhaust gas. The only by-products are carbon dioxide and water.
